CEN FAQs: Learning from Pandemic Shortages

We remember many Individuals being agitated with spot shortages in stores. Toilet paper, cleaning supplies and hand sanitizers were among the most high-profile items missing, or in short supply, from many shelves. Additionally, many canned foods and meat products were missing at times or purchases were limited. A wise person thinks back and learns from the experience.

There are three reasons to put aside additional supplies, in reasonable quantities, for future use. First, if we already had a few extra rolls of toilet paper we didn’t have to try to scramble looking for supplies. Second, we will have additional stock to share with others opening up ministry opportunities. Third, the price of the most basic staples tends to increase and if we put aside a little extra we are getting ahead of future price increases.

Start by thinking through the items that were in short supply for a time during March and April and make sure you have adequate supplies to get through any possible future difficulties.

Next, go over the items in your pantry and medicine cabinet and take an inventory. Identify the items which you use on a regular basis and would be difficult to do without. For example, if you take Tylenol on a regular basis, put up several extra bottles, remembering for a time Tylenol purchases were limited when available.

A survey conducted by HealthDayNews indicated 53% of households didn’t have a three-day supply of nonperishable food. The same survey indicated most homeowners felt they could live in their home 16 days during a disaster.

After you’ve taken some steps to acquire additional items for your pantry and if a disaster strikes or a COVID generated run on items at the supermarket you’re able to reach out to your neighbors and be of assistance.  For example, when hand sanitizer was in short supply, we had a couple of extra bottles we were able to provide a local school. When you reach out you're able to offer a time of prayer and with a listening ear when others around you need to unload their fears and concerns. Help others understand that Christ is the answer.

King Solomon wrote, “Walk in the manner of the ant, O slacker; observe its ways and become wise. Without a commander, without an overseer or ruler, it prepares provisions in summer; it gathers food at harvest.” (Proverbs 6:6-8)

  1. Always be prepared in season and out of season. If you have extra and can share at a time of need, it is a GREAT witness!
