CEN FAQs: Protecting Pets During an Emergency

During emergencies we want to be able to protect our pets from injury, death or being left to wander around aimlessly. Each pet owner should take some key steps in advance to protect your animals during a disaster. They need a GO BAG just like you!

  1. The first step is to affix a simple sticker by your front and back doors. These stickers alert the fire department or other rescue workers of the presence of a pet. If you vacate your property with your pet, write evacuated on the sticker to save rescue workers time searching. These stickers are frequently available at your local pet food store.

  2. Find shelters in advance if you cannot take them with you. You never want to risk your life, or that of a family member, when evacuating during an emergency. As sad as the situation would be, better to have your dog or cat killed in a wildfire than losing your child.  In a large-scale disaster, you’ll need to keep your animals with you or find shelters which are pet friendly. We need to keep in mind some individuals have severe allergies. So there must be some separation which works for both the animal lovers and those who are allergic in your pet emergency plan

  3. Ensure all dogs and cats have collars with current contact information on tags. Frequently, owners may change cell phone numbers and not update the phone number on the animal’s tag. Include the animal's name and any major medical issues which may require immediate attention. Another option is to microchip your cat or dog which will provide easier tracing should the separation occur.

  4. Prepare a Go bag. Like individuals a go bag should be prepared for your pet and placed in a strategic location for an easy grab and go during a crisis. During some of the California wildfires some families literally had only moments to escape. Your pet’s emergency supplies should be kept in a small backpack or carry bag to keep everything together, not only when you depart the premises but while you may be in a hotel or an emergency shelter.

  5. Prepare commonly used food in daily use containers. Pet food is the first logical item and always best to maintain the same food used on a daily basis. If canned food is utilized, purchase appropriately sized cans and if they’re not pop-ups make sure you toss in a can opener. If the dry food is used then keep in individually apportioned bags which can be sealed, and make sure you rotate the dried food at least every two months to keep everything fresh. You should always carry a 3-to-7-day supply of pet food along with any medications or supplements your pet needs.

  6. Prepare containers to shelter off site. Include in your bag dishes for water and food, you don’t want to assume you will be able to locate the correct containers in the shelter, or hotel room.

  7. Add disposable boxes. For cats bring enough kitty litter to last a week and bring aluminum cooking pans to use as disposable kitty litter boxes.

  8. Prepare a box with cleaning supplies. For cleanup bring paper towels, liquid and hard soap as well as disinfectant. Also, bring a few disposable garbage bags which will be necessary for cleaning up your animal’s deposits.

  9. Prepare a separate set of restraints. It’s always good to toss in an extra harness, collar and leash. Further, make sure that you keep records of your veterinarian visits, shots and other pertinent medical information.

  10. Procure a carrying case with your supplies and multi-purposes to cage your pet as needed for transporting. A case should be available for each animal. Make sure you have lining material for the carrying case available to maintain a sanitary situation. While not mission-critical, it is always good to have toys available to help entertain your cat or dog.

King Solomon wrote, “Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.” (Proverbs 11:10).

Living through an emergency evacuation or crisis is incredibly stressful. Diffuse stress by preparing in advance to evacuate with your pet. Prayerfully consider packing an extra bag for those unprepared so that you may share the Hope of Christ within you when they ask: “Where is God in this?” Be ready for your family, your pet AND those God places in your path!

CEN FAQs: Keep the Family Warm When Power is Out

When winter storms knock out power a family needs to take steps mitigating the effects of a freezing house. Especially when living in an area subject to power outages a family may take several steps to prepare for a winter onslaught without power. For example, a backup power generator will provide enough energy to run most freezers, refrigerators and furnace units if purchased and prepared in advance.  A backup wood stove will heat all or most of most homes and becomes a centerpiece for most rooms and is a great option for backup heat requirements.

Read CEN article on Kerosene heaters  as an effective backup source.

Another option, which may be expensive, is to locate a hotel and relocate the family. However, when experiencing a power outage and you don’t have backup arrangements in place, there’s still much you’re able to do.

During winter the house will begin to experience temperature drops quickly so start putting on warm clothes before becoming cold. Use layered clothing which will more effectively trap your body than a single heavy coat. Use extra pairs of socks, work gloves and wear a warm hat even in the house. You’re not making a fashion statement but keep in mind it’s far easier to stay warm than it is to warm up in a cold house after you're chilled to the bone.  A lot of heat will escape from  your hands and head. Scripture gives as an example,She has no fear of winter for her household, for everyone has warm clothes.” (Proverbs 31:21)

Select one room for the family to occupy together, preferably a room with a low ceiling and not too large, keeping the heat contained in the room. A family may be tempted to want to return to their bedrooms for sleep, but better when possible to set up camp in your designated room and the combined body heat will significantly assist in keeping everyone warm. King Solomon understood this principle when he wrote, “Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone?” (Ecclesiastes 4:11)

If you have a regular fireplace, they are not very efficient for heating, as vigorously as possible to kick out more heat and warm the hearth. Encourage someone to get up during the evening to rekindle the fire to keep what heat is available going.

Read the CEN article on Candle use. Properly and safely used the candles will provide some additional heat as well as light source.

Heating Warm drinks and hot food will go a long way to lifting spirits and keeping everybody warm. CEN article Cooking when the power goes out. If you don’t have backup cooking utensils many larger candles will still heat up tea or other drinks and your barbecue will likely warm-up canned foods.

Another step to take is to close all curtains, blinds and window coverings which will help serve as insulation to retain heat in the house.

Always keep in mind the importance of staying ahead of feeling cold, which is why all of these warming steps should be taken sooner rather than later. Always stay focused easier to stay warm than to take additional warm-up steps once you are freezing. Any home without heat during winter cold presents a significant challenge to any family. Following these key principles will make your unexpected family togetherness as pleasant as possible. Learn more how to be a ReadyChristian.

CEN Advisory: National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin Issued

The Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued a National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Bulletin based upon a review of the threat environment across the United States. DHS believes this threat environment may persist for several weeks. As Washington D.C. and state capitals around the nation sustain a military presence with no defined stand down in sight, the DHS Bulletin suggests some ideologically-motivated violent extremists with objections to the exercise of U.S. governmental authority or the U.S. Presidential transition, as well as other perceived grievances, could pose a threat.

A NTAS Bulletin describes current developments or general trends regarding threats of terrorism is derived from a threat/risk analysis conducted across all federal law enforcement agencies. To view the NTAS Bulletin

CEN is monitoring this development and continues to collaborate with our trusted partners in law enforcement and across the Christian community. At this time our CEN National Team is unaware of any specific threats to the Christian community. However, with the rise of Christian killings up 60% this past year, the recent bomb explosion at the El Monte CA church, and the rise in arson attacks against Christian churches in the past weeks, is cause for every Christian family and Church Safety Security team to remain vigilant.

Mary Marr, CEN Founder and President, Co-Chair of the recent DHS Subcommittee on Preventing Targeted Violence Against Faith Communities says: “NTAS Bulletins do not depict a known or imminent threat to the U.S. It is issued as a warning to be vigilant. CEN has been preparing Christians to be ready for emergencies large and small for twenty years. The readiness principles are the same: being ready physically, emotionally, and mentally is important for our own immediate survival in any crises. However, being ready to give the Hope of Jesus Christ for such a time as this, answering the question, ‘Where is God in this?’ IS eternal.”

CEN FAQs: Learning from Pandemic Shortages

We remember many Individuals being agitated with spot shortages in stores. Toilet paper, cleaning supplies and hand sanitizers were among the most high-profile items missing, or in short supply, from many shelves. Additionally, many canned foods and meat products were missing at times or purchases were limited. A wise person thinks back and learns from the experience.

There are three reasons to put aside additional supplies, in reasonable quantities, for future use. First, if we already had a few extra rolls of toilet paper we didn’t have to try to scramble looking for supplies. Second, we will have additional stock to share with others opening up ministry opportunities. Third, the price of the most basic staples tends to increase and if we put aside a little extra we are getting ahead of future price increases.

Start by thinking through the items that were in short supply for a time during March and April and make sure you have adequate supplies to get through any possible future difficulties.

Next, go over the items in your pantry and medicine cabinet and take an inventory. Identify the items which you use on a regular basis and would be difficult to do without. For example, if you take Tylenol on a regular basis, put up several extra bottles, remembering for a time Tylenol purchases were limited when available.

A survey conducted by HealthDayNews indicated 53% of households didn’t have a three-day supply of nonperishable food. The same survey indicated most homeowners felt they could live in their home 16 days during a disaster.

After you’ve taken some steps to acquire additional items for your pantry and if a disaster strikes or a COVID generated run on items at the supermarket you’re able to reach out to your neighbors and be of assistance.  For example, when hand sanitizer was in short supply, we had a couple of extra bottles we were able to provide a local school. When you reach out you're able to offer a time of prayer and with a listening ear when others around you need to unload their fears and concerns. Help others understand that Christ is the answer.

King Solomon wrote, “Walk in the manner of the ant, O slacker; observe its ways and become wise. Without a commander, without an overseer or ruler, it prepares provisions in summer; it gathers food at harvest.” (Proverbs 6:6-8)

How ReadyChristian training works.

How ReadyChristian training works.

The ReadyChristian training is a comprehensive guide that will walk you through the process of developing as a ReadyChristian. Below are the recommended process steps to developing a ReadyChristian.

Understand Biblical Readiness

Having an understanding of what the Bible teaches about preparedness and being ready to give an answer to the hope that lies within us is the foundation for the ReadyChristian

Build a Personal Preparedness and Response Network

Before you can begin developing as a ReadyChristian, you must first know where you stand using the personal Biblical Readiness Assessment. This assessment will help you identify where you are already strong in readiness as well as areas to improve and it will help you define the importance of biblical readiness and what means to be biblically ready.

Engaging in Together We Will Stand and Emergency Pray-Care-Share Activities

We are not alone as Christians and “Together We Will Stand” is an important part of the ReadyChristian process. This section walks you through the TWWS material and how to develop as ReadyChristians, together

Make a Kit and Make a Plan

This section walks you through the importance of making a kit and having a plan. It also provides lists and recommendations for what to include in the kit and plan.

Be Informed and Create a Growth Plan

Part of the ReadyChristian process is to remain informed and create a growth plan to further networking, preparedness, and response engagement in the process. This section will give suggestions on where you can find information to stay informed as well as gives suggestions to creating a growth plan.

Respond as a Christian

This section outlines the importance and characteristics that define a ReadyChristian and begins the process of identifying how a ReadyChristian will respond in times of crisis.

Practice Responding

It has been said that “practice makes perfect.” Part of being a ReadyChristian is to practice the response measures that you have put into place. This allows the ReadyChristian to see the strengths and weaknesses of their plan and adjust accordingly.

Engaging in Further, Ongoing Training

The remaining chapter gives suggestions for engaging in further training. As this training is designed to be done either individually or in a small group setting, we have offered some suggestions that can be done individually or corporately.

Get Started

We recognize that people will be coming into this training at different preparedness levels. To help gauge where you may be at in the ReadyChristian process, take this brief 10 question survey.
