CEN FAQs: Using Sound For Emergency Signals

Emergencies may strike very quickly, such as when jogging through thick vegetation, walking to a car on a dark evening or having a threatening experience at home. Using sound during an immediate emergency accomplishes two goals.

First, an attack may be thwarted because the would-be mugger or house invader will be scared off when they hear a loud noise. In most situations this is a good result. Personal alarms may be carried on your person, on a keychain, hung from a belt or from a purse strap. The goal is to be able to quickly activate this alarm alerting others of the danger and hopefully scaring away a thief or stopping an assault. If you don’t want to purchase an alarm a small whistle, preferably of metal, will also do the job.

Second, emergency signals may communicate with other members of your household during an immediate crisis. Small handheld air horns, or alternatively whistles, would be very useful during a home emergency. These may be placed in many key areas around the house, in the pantry, the garage, perhaps in a drawer by all entryways, bedrooms and other strategic places throughout the house.

Work out three separate signals which are communicated and understood by each family member to communicate about how to respond to specific situations. For example, a longer blast may indicate everyone evacuate the house immediately and go to an established rally point. You should already have established a rally point in the event of a fire evacuation.

A family can use three short bursts as an indicator to come immediately to the source of the noise as help such as medical or help may be needed but there is not an additional outside threat.

A series of short blasts continuing for 30 seconds may indicate an immediate threat, such as a home invasion, and send the signal that everyone is to take shelter. Neighbors may hear your sound and also help respond.

Practice signals from time to time and communicate with your family, based on age appropriateness, and make sure each understands the importance of acting quickly should a threat or an emergency arise. Make the drills fun!

A ReadyChristian understands the step of acquiring some low-cost emergency sound alarms may make a difference between acting appropriately during an emergency or suffering serious consequences.
