CEN FAQs: Fire Smoke Affects Cars

When fires continue to rage as they have this year, many are coughing sneezing, and suffering respiratory difficulties as a result of the smoke. We also need to understand the same small contaminants are affecting our automobiles. While this may seem to be a minor issue, if your car breaks down then you now have an individual emergency that requires immediate attention.

The same smoke that causes people to be congested, throats to become sore and hacking coughs will affect your automobile.

We need to consider changing air filters if dirty because the performance of our engine will be degraded and your engine will need to work harder to perform, shortening the life of the engine. Further, an air filter can only hold so much got and after a while, the dirt will no longer be constrained by the filter but will start pushing into our engine causing wear and tear and possibly a breakdown with the future expense.

Another filter we don’t always consider is the cabin filter, a filter that improves the quality of air coming through our air conditioning and heating system. which we will breathe. These filters are designed to eliminate pollen, dust, and even mold spores from coming into her vehicle to be breathed. When the cabin filter is full the protection is lost and particularly those with respiratory illnesses will become more effective. The situation is something we don’t always consider carefully.

While we may not look at replacing her car filters with the same urgency that we do fighting a forest fire, when the smoke clears consider checking your air filters to verify that they’re still doing the appropriate job and if not replace them to protect yourself, your family and your engine.
